Goninan is now one of the main two locomotive manufacturers in
Australia, with Clyde-EDI, and is the GE license-holder in this
country. Since the early 1950's, Goninan has built around 330
locos for local operators, with most of this being in the 80's and
90's. Goninan has factories at Broadmeadow (Newcastle),
Townsville, and Bassendean (Perth), and was a subsidiary of
engineering company Howard Smith, until being sold recently. GE
(USA) has built around 50 locos for Australian operators. GE
electrical equipment was also used on most of the locos with Alco engines.
Goninan are now part of United Group Ltd.
