Clyde/EDI Rail-EMD / EMD Locomotives

Model Numbers

Clyde Engineering is one of the oldest surviving locomotive manufacturers, having built its first loco in 1892. Clyde is the Australian license-holder for EMD, and the first Clyde-built diesel loco, GM1, appeared in 1951. Since then, Clyde has built over 1500 diesel (and a few electric) locomotives, both for Australian operators, sugar mills, industrial locos, and for export. They have (or had) factories at Granville (Sydney), Bathurst, Somerton (Melbourne), Rosewater (Adelaide), Eagle Farm (Brisbane - where the actual construction was done by Comeng at Rocklea); as well as in conjunction with Comeng at Bassendean (Perth), and also using the ANI plant at Mittagong. Clyde have also worked with Walkers.
As well, EMD (in USA and Canada) has built several locos for Australian operators, mostly for heavy-haul work for mining operations. EMD is now part of Progress Rail (in turn, part of Caterpillar).
In 2000, Evans Deakin Industries (Walker's parent company) took over Clyde Industries, and the two then merged to become EDI Rail. More recently, EDI itself was taken over by a foreign company.
Most of EDI Rail's manufacturing work is now done at Cardiff (Newcastle) and Maryborough, with some also at Port Augusta.
EDI has also moved into manufacturing locos to lease to operators.
However, as from around 2013, manufacturing in Australia will cease with additions to the TT and 83 classes likely to be the last locally-built locos at Cardiff and Maryborough respectively. EDI will do maintenance work only from this time.
